Ardea herodias is a large wading bird in the heron family, found near open water and wetlands over most of North America and Central America, as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. They are largest of the North American herons, with long legs, powerful neck, and thick, daggerlike bill. Hunting Great Blue Herons wade slowly or stand statue-like, stalking prey in shallow water or open field. Suddenly, a lightning-fast thrust of the neck and dinner is acquired. In flight, they are unmistakably distinctive, neck tucked in a tight s-curve, wings beating slowly, and gangly legs trailing behind.
