River Otter

$50.00

River otters (Lontra canadensis) are semi aquatic and live along waterways and coasts throughout North America. An adult can weigh 5-14 kg (11-31 lbs). They feed primarily on fish, as well as amphibians, shellfish, snails, and small turtles. Their form is tapered and streamlined for smooth underwater performance. I love their beautiful, fully-articulated toes, webbed for optimal swimming power. Their sense of smell and hearing are acute, but their vision on land, adapted for underwater, is nearsighted. Nevertheless, they can walk, run, bound, and slide. I picture them body surf-sledding in the snow and ice, frolicking together in a social pod. They live and hunt in groups of females with young, or males.
