Flowering Quince
Chaenomeles speciosa, otherwise known as flowering quince or apple blossom, is a deciduous shrub of the Rosacea family originally native to China. Fresh from the shrub, this fruit is famously hard and bitter. Growing up, I regularly climbed a nearby quince tree, and wrinkled my nose, tasting its raw fruit. But it can be cooked to a sweet, fragrant jelly, preserve, or paste, and that is a special treat indeed.
